ความจริง ประเทศไทยของเรามีวันสำคัญมากมาย ซึ่งล้วนแต่มีความหมาย ความสำคัญ และเกี่ยวข้องกับทางศาสนาเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ถามต่อไปว่า เมื่อถึงวันสำคัญเช่นนนี้ เราจะได้ประโยชน์จากวันที่ผู้คนลงมติแล้วว่าสำคัญได้อย่างไร งั้น เรามาทบทวนถึงวันมาฆบูชาว่า มีความสำคัญอย่างไร นะครับ
วันมาฆบูชา (Maga Puja Day or Makha Bucha DAY) ซึ่งในปีนี้ตรงกับวันที่ 21 กุมภาพันธ์ 2551 เป็นวันสำคัญวันหนึ่งในพระพุทธศาสนา เรียกว่า "วันจาตุรงคสันนิบาต" คือ การประชุมพร้อมด้วยองค์ ๔ ประการ ดังนี้
วันนั้นเป็นวันมาฆปุณมี คือวันเพ็ญขึ้น 15 ค่ำกลางเดือนมาฆะ (เดือน 3)
พระภิกษุ 1,250 รูป มาประชุมกันโดยมิได้นัดหมาย
พระภิกษุที่มาประชุมกันทั้งหมดล้วนแต่เป็นพระอรหันต์ ประเภทฉฬภิญญา
พระภิกษุทั้งหมดได้รับการอุปสมบทโดยตรงจากพระพุทธเจ้า (เอหิภิกขุอุปสมฺปทา)
ส่วนภาคภาษาอังกฤษนั้น มีดังนี้ครับ
Today was a religious holiday for everyone in Thailand. Like other Buddhist holidays, Makha Bucha Day doesn't happen on the same date every year. It is all to do with the phases of the moon. This holiday is held on the full moon of the third lunar month (usually end of February or early March). This day marks four events that took place during Lord Buddha's lifetime, namely:
* 1250 Buddhist monks from different places came to pay homage to Lord Buddha, each of his own initiative and without prior notification or appointment.
* all of them were enlightened monks
* all of them had been individually ordained by Lord Buddha himself
* they assembled on the full moon day of the third lunar month.
On this day, Thai people go to their local temple in the morning to make merit, listen to sermons and also to take part in a candle-lit procession around the chapel. However, judging by the number of people in the shopping malls I don't think going to the local temple is as important as it was in the past. A recent survey suggested 60-70 per cent of Thai families do not visit temples. Thai young people, for instance, are far more interested in St Valentine’s Day than Makha Bucha Day. To try and counteract that, The Ministry of Culture have decided, in their wisdom, that what is needed here is some “Dhamma Rap”!
INTERESTING FACTS: According to the Kasikorn Research Centre, Thai people spend about 3.3 billion baht annually on making merit and giving donations to Buddhist monks. Surprisingly, 1.1 billion baht was spent each year in the north-east, 760 million in the greater Bangkok area, 750 million in the central plains, 550 million in the north and 160 million in the south.
Magha Puja Day (Fourfold Assembly or "Sangha Day")
Magha Puja Day took place on the full moon day of the third lunar month (March). This holy day is observed to commemorate an important events in the life of the Buddha. This event occurred early in the Buddha's teaching life.

After the first Rain Retreat (Vassa) at the Deer Park at Sarnath, the Buddha went to Rajagaha city where 1250 Arahats,(Enlightened saints) who were the Buddha's disciples, without prior appointment, returned from their wanderings to pay respect to the Buddha. They assembled in the Veruvana Monastery with the two chief disciples of the Buddha, Ven. Sariputta and Ven. Moggalana.
The assembly is called the Fourfold Assembly because it consisted of four factors: (1) All 1250 were Arahats; (2) All of them were ordained by the Buddha himself; (3) They assembled by themselves without any prior call; (4) It was the full moon day of Magha month (March).
